How to Prune Plants Properly
Healthy pruning starts with the reason for the cut, the plant's growth habit, and the right season. Use this guide to make clean cuts that improve shape, airflow, flowering, or yield without taking too much.

Decide why you are pruning
Remove dead or diseased material first. Then choose whether you need to shape the plant, improve airflow, encourage branching, control size, or take a propagation cutting.
Check the plant and season
Identify the species and whether it flowers on old or new wood. Most houseplants recover best in spring or early summer; many shrubs have more specific timing.
Clean and sharpen your tools
Use sharp bypass pruners or scissors. Disinfect the blades before starting and again after cutting diseased material.
Find a healthy node or branch collar
For leafy stems, cut just above the node you want to keep. For a whole branch, cut just outside the swollen branch collar without leaving a long stub.
Make a clean, deliberate cut
Support the stem and cut without crushing or tearing it. Remove a little at a time and reassess the plant from all sides.
Give calm aftercare
Return the plant to suitable light, water normally, and keep fresh cuts dry. Avoid compensating with extra fertilizer or water.
When to prune plants
Season is a useful starting point, but flower buds, climate, and species always matter.
Plant-specific pruning guides
The exact cut changes with the plant. Choose a guide, then use the photo assistant to match it to the stems in front of you.
